During the longest, I was a proud owner of an AMD GPU. It was an old map of the 2010s, but served me well for about 5 years before stopping using the PC he called at home. Years later, I decided to change the GPU To one of the new cards in the NVIDI RTX 40 series, wanting to breathe new life into the old machine. What I have not sought enough are the differences that I would find between GPU AMD and NVIDIA.

A clean break
It was clear that I needed different pilots for the NVIDIA GPU, but I did not know that everyone recommended that the previous ones completely uninstall. A simple uninstallation in Windows settings was apparently not sufficient, because the process tends to leave traces of old files, which can sometimes interfere with the new installation of the pilot. During my time on the AMD GPU, I have never found myself often using the associated software. Some pilot updates here and there, of course, but I have rarely opened the program for something else. After moving to Nvidia and tried the new NVIDIA ApplicationI was surprised to see the frequent pilot updates, which were much more than what I was used to on AMD. And it could be due to Nvidia marketing, but I started using the software more often, if only to switch or deactivate the myriad of features.
I did not use AMD adrenaline software Personally, since that of my former AMD GPU was something else, but I discovered later that it was better than the Nvidia application in certain departments. The integrated distribution function to share game flows to Twitch and YouTube, and more extensive overclocking controls have attracted my attention the most. In addition, recent challenges that users face with NVIDIA pilots on both RTX 40 and RTX 50 series GPUs facilitate AMD GPUs and adrenaline application seem much better in comparison.

I had to recompile the shaders
This one surprised me the most
Once I had the new GPU set up, I wanted to do it to take a look in my favorite games. Some games worked well, but I then started to see other titles recompile the shaders during the first launch. The first time it happened, I ignored it, but after two more games, I did the same thing, I realized that the new GPU could be at the origin. And of course, when I googled on this subject, it turned out that the passage from AMD to Nvidia or Vice Versa requires many games to recompile the shaders for compatibility with the new hardware configuration.
If I had upgraded to another AMD GPU, it would probably not have happened, but the switching between GPU manufacturers who uses different architectures makes the Shader necessary, at least for the first time a game is launched. The shaders are then stored in the Shadder cache, so you don’t need to start waiting again. Although it is a small hiccup before you can use the new Nvidia GPU in my games, knowledge would have saved me a lot of time asking me what was going on.

When I had the NVIDIA GPU in my hands, I was surprised by the new fancy feeding connector. The 12VHPWR connector was different from PCIE connectors with 8 regular pins that I had seen on my AMD GPU and many other models. The new GPU came with a group adapter, so connecting it to my power supply was not a roadblock, but I would have liked to know before becoming the first in the purchase.
My old power supply did not have the 12VHPWR connector that the new ATX 3.0 Or the ATX 3.1 models are now delivered. One of these models would have made the PC cleaner, because I would not have to face the clumsy adapter which exceeds as a sore inch of the GPU. A single 12VHPWR cable between the PSU and the GPU is not only transparent, but it is also supposed to offer more resilience to these GPUs eager for power. The question of fusion connectors is however another story.

The jump into RT performance was more impressive than I thought
AMD is still late in the tracing of the shelves
I have never been in Ray Tracing as much as some other players. With the exception of Cyberpunk 2077I had not played many titles with high intensity of RT before moving to Nvidia on my secondary machine. Thus, the difference in the visuals due to the performance of tracing the upper rays was a shock. AMD was not known for its shelving tracing chops before the RX 90 series was fighting on most of the gap between AMD and NVIDIA, so I was not exactly prepared for the possible type of game on the NVIDIA card.
If I had known that the experience in person to play intensive RT games on the NVIDIA GPUs was also impressive, I would have thought of changing earlier. AMD may have considerably improved its tracing, scaling and generation of frame trace technologies with GPUs such as the RX 9070 XT And RX 9070But this can take the red team, another generation or two before you can equal or exceed Nvidia.

NVIDIA and AMD are closer than ever
Competition on the GPU market has never been better. AMD has delivered some of the best mid -range game GPUs ever, Nvidia always holds the head of the cutting edge RT titles, and Intel pushes what is possible for budgetary GPUs with its battle cards. I went from AMD to NVIDIA for several reasons, including better coding and better compatibility of NVIDIA’s software battery with the productivity programs I use. However, I would not be opposed to returning to AMD next time, in particular with the management in which the company is heading.
