Chief Technology Officer of the Dnipro company DeViro, which specializes in the design, development and production of UAVs, in particular the Leleka drone, Denys Chumachenko shared his thoughts on drone swarms and ways to counter them.
«I have never seen a swarm of drones before, never seen one in person, and until I see one, I don’t really believe in them,» said Denys Chumachenko at a panel during the DEFENSE TECH INNOVATIONS FORUM 2025, which took place today in Kyiv.
However, CTO DeViro added that he knows several companies in Ukraine and around the world that are trying to do this and, according to him, are working quite well.
«So we need to prepare now,» noted Denys Chumachenko.
As CTO DeViro simulated the situation, for example, a swarm of «Shaheeds» will be very clearly visible, in particular, such a swarm will also be easily identified by locator and its sound will be audible.
Denys Chumachenko emphasized what is needed to destroy a swarm of drones. In particular, weapons of mass destruction should work against it.
«I think drones versus drones is a cool topic,» he noted, and highlighted other challenges that exist. In particular, according to the leader, it is important not only to fly and hit where you need to, which they are good at, but also to have the means to find the swarm and target it.
According to CTO DeViro, if volume-detonating munitions appear, for example, with a large number of fragments or an explosive component, as well as a software component that will help to reach the target area and hit it, then a drone with volume detonation will help in the future to «shoot» these swarms. «If we see them,» added Denys Chumachenko.
