In 2024, the Romanian AI innovation ecosystem presented intriguing developments, highlighted by the €55.2 million funding round of FintechOS. Even though the total investments so far are 28 million euros lower than in 2023, it is possible to surpass last year’s record. Notable rounds include FilmChain’s €2.8 million seed and Genezio’s €1.8 million pre-seed, cementing Romania as one of the top three countries in Central and Eastern Europe with 13.6% AI startups.

More than 160 million euros raised by early-stage venture capital funds
Romanian startups raised a significant portion of their funds early on, with 51% of funding rounds in the seed stage and 18% in pre-seed. Major contributors like FintechOS (€55.2 million) are leading the landscape, followed by emerging players like Creatopy, which secured €9.2 million in a Series A round co-led by 3VC, based in Vienna, and Point Nine, based in Berlin. Established in Oradea in 2021, Creatopy uses AI-powered creative automation to help organizations efficiently produce personalized advertisements.
Romania has also made progress in the area of venture capital. Four local funds have raised more than €160 million in fresh capital in total, enabling local startups to invest at early or mid-stage.
Growing AI Infrastructure
Romania continues to lay a solid foundation for the future of AI. The country had approximately 146 AI product companies as of August 2024, with 49,100 professionals working in the field of AI, a key indicator of growth. The establishment of Romania’s first AI research institute at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca marks another important milestone. Featuring 30 advanced laboratories, the institute will focus on innovations in healthcare, transportation and cybersecurity.
Furthermore, Romania updated its AI strategy in 2024 to align it with EU AI law, thus consolidating its commitment to ethical and effective deployment of AI. AI.
The UiPath snowball effect
Beyond its well-established unicorn UiPath, Romania is gaining ground with international investors. Companies like Creatopy are putting Romania on the map with innovative applications of AI technology, while other early-stage startups like Genezio and FilmChain are attracting attention with cutting-edge solutions.
Romania’s evolving AI strategy and growing funding ecosystem position it as a rising star in the CEE region’s innovation landscape. With increased investments and infrastructure, the country is poised to take its AI ecosystem to the next level.
