Alphabet and Nvidia have joined a group of prominent venture capital investors backing Safe Superintelligence (SSI), a startup co-founded by OpenAI’s co-founder and former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, as per a Reuters report.
SSI has swiftly become one of the most valuable AI startups and was recently valued at a USD 32 billion in a funding round led by Greenoaks. Known for its ambitious AI model research, the company is gaining attention for its potential to push the boundaries of AI, largely thanks to Sutskever’s established track record in the field.
The involvement of Alphabet, which also develops AI models through its various platforms, comes alongside a deal announced earlier this week between its cloud computing division and SSI. Under the deal, Alphabet will provide SSI with access to its proprietary tensor processing units (TPUs), AI chips designed to accelerate machine learning tasks.
Although the precise terms of Alphabet’s and Nvidia’s investments remain unclear, their strategic involvement in SSI marks a shift in the tech industry, with major players increasingly aligning themselves with AI startups that are at the forefront of research.
