Cloud computing trends are entering a pivotal era as artificial intelligence reshapes how businesses and developers operate. What started as a simple data center migration to the cloud has evolved into a vibrant ecosystem of native AI tools that improve creativity and efficiency.
Developers now have advanced coding platforms and large language models, enabling rapid innovation, while businesses integrate AI-powered workflows to unlock new possibilities and transform their competitive strategies. This synergy between cloud computing and AI paves the way for a transformative technological leap, according to Jerry Chen (photo), general partner at Greylock Partners LLC.
“Over the last 12 or 13 years, you’ve been through this cloud-to-mobile transition,” he said. “The first phase was simply moving things from your data center to the cloud. The second phase is to rewrite things in a cloud-native way. Amazon really pioneered what cloud native means. Now we see what native AI means. I think we see Amazon trying to reinvent itself to say, “We are the cloud native of AI. »
Chen spoke with CUBE Research John Furrier For theCUBE “AWS re:Invent Cloud Coverage” during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how cloud computing trends are evolving with the integration of native AI tools, enabling innovation and reshaping business strategies.
Development of native AI reshapes cloud computing trends
Cloud technology has evolved from data center migrations to cloud-native applications. It is now entering a phase of native AI powered by tools such as GitHub Copilot and major language models. These advances allow developers to create smarter, more efficient applications with less effort, according to Chen.
“I think what you see is two things. First, the tools you have to become a better and faster developer are there,” he said. “Number two… you have what we call the LLM, the big language models, the video models, the ephemeral applications. What does native AI mean for… 25-year-old founders and developers or large companies? (It takes) everything you have, but imagine (having) this super powerful AI resource to connect to that just creates the new creative space.
Generational dynamics also play a role in this transformation. Young developers, who grew up with Google Docs and cloud services as standard, are now entering the workforce with a different mindset. These developers take the cloud as a no-brainer and instead focus on creating solutions that leverage AI and other cutting-edge tools, according to Chen.
“The ease of use of building enterprise applications through these large-scale life models has changed,” he said. “I can now make all of this sexy again because A, the design aesthetic, B, mobile and C, can use things like chat or voice to make these things accessible. I can create software like humans using AI.
The debate between bundling and unbundling cloud services is particularly relevant. As companies such as Amazon and Google consolidate AI tools into their broader cloud ecosystems, the rise of specialized platforms such as GPU clouds and bespoke AI infrastructure providers signals a potential evolution towards unbundling. This trend reflects the unbundling seen in data services, with companies such as Snowflake and Databricks carving out niches in the market.
“I think you see Amazon, Azure, Google bundling a bunch of services together and they’re saying the AI elements should be tied into your storage, into your network,” Chen said. “Then you see GPU clouds like Crusoe, Lambda… and they run on all clouds. I think you might see an unbundling of services due to AI, because it’s very different from what you had before. These guys aren’t going away, but I think there’s a great opportunity to build the next Amazon, maybe outside of Amazon, maybe on Amazon.
