The basic education department has consulted the changes to its national policy concerning the program and the promotion requirements of classes R to 12, officially adding coding and robotics to the list of subjects to offer R to 9.
The department is piloting coding and robotics as a school matter for several years, implementing it with a small test group in the 3rd year classes in 2021.
The Gazette which was published on Friday June 7, officially adds the subject to R to 9 in the national program declaration, but not yet the 10th to the 12th year.
According to BusinesstechThe subject is included alongside mathematics from R to 3 to 3 years old and included alongside mathematics, natural sciences and 4th to 9th year.
In terms of matters approved for the national qualifying framework, it is listed among other STEM materials such as computer applications technology, mathematics, physical sciences, life sciences, information technology and ‘Mathematics literacy.
STEM subjects in South Africa include science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
