GLENVILLE, N.Y. (WRGB) — The town of Glenville is preparing to introduce a new school bus safety initiative for the Scotia-Glenville School District. In collaboration with “BusPatrol,” the program will implement a school bus stop-arm photo enforcement system aimed at enhancing student safety.
The initiative will equip Scotia-Glenville’s school buses with BusPatrol’s cloud-connected, AI-powered technology. This system is designed to capture images of vehicles that illegally pass a bus while the stop-arm is extended, with the goal of reducing such violations.
Scheduled to commence on May 1, the program will not incur any costs for the town or the district. BusPatrol will cover the initial investment and will be reimbursed through a share of the revenue generated from violations. The penalty for a first-time violation is set at $250.
Officials in Albany County have been advocating for increased caution, highlighting the significance of bus safety. In October 2023, more than 6,000 violations were reported in Albany County for passing a stopped school bus, affecting areas such as South Colonie, Bethlehem, and Guilderland.
Glenville’s announcement aligns with New York State’s Operation Safe Stop, an annual public awareness campaign promoting bus safety. The announcement is scheduled to take place at the Scotia-Glenville Central School District’s bus garage at 1 p.m.
