As Frieze Seoul kicks off, K11 Art Foundation sets the stage with a series of exciting events, starting with its highly anticipated Moon Festival to celebrate Korea’s moon festival, Chuseok. Embracing the spirit of creativity and cultural synergy, the foundation presents its first-ever generative art exhibition, titled Lunar water. This groundbreaking showcase not only honors the traditional Korean festival, but also highlights the innovative intersection of art and technology.
THE Lunar water The exhibition is supported by title sponsor Flipster and digital display partner LG OLED, ensuring a cutting-edge experience for attendees. The exhibition features a stunning range of generative artworks by renowned artists, including South Korean digital art collective a’strict, renowned generative artist Tyler Hobbs, and visionary Cheng Ran.
Cheng Ran’s contribution to the exhibition is particularly noteworthy. In collaboration with Genify and Bohan Sun, Cheng reimagined his monumental nine-hour film During the miraculous— originally created at the Istanbul Biennale — into a large-scale generative artwork. This work marks Cheng’s debut in the field of generative art, offering a new and dynamic perspective on his work.
Tyler Hobbs, a pioneer in the field of generative art, is showcasing his groundbreaking NFT works at the exhibition. His works explore the dynamic intersection of digital and analog art, providing viewers with insight into the evolving world of generative creativity. Hobbs’ work demonstrates the limitless possibilities that technology offers for pushing the boundaries of visual art.
A’strict’s fascinating digital installation adds to the immersive experience. Waterfall — Sands. Using anamorphic illusions and advanced projection techniques, this installation creates a stunning visual representation of a cascading waterfall, accompanied by the sound of rushing waters. The installation is a powerful demonstration of how digital art can elicit deep emotional responses, blending the natural world with digital innovation.
In addition to the exhibition, K11 founder Adrian Cheng will unveil two important initiatives: the K11 Lounge and the K11 Curator Price. These initiatives reflect Cheng’s vision for the foundation’s future, highlighting its commitment to fostering innovation and supporting cross-cultural artists who push the boundaries of visual language through cutting-edge technology.
Lunar water is on view from September 4 to 7 during Frieze Seoul, offering a unique opportunity to discover the avant-garde of generative art. For those interested in the convergence of art and technology, this exhibition is a must-see.
