Last month at Meta Connect, Mark Zuckerberg said Meta AI was “well on its way” to becoming the world’s most widely used generative AI assistant. The company has now taken a major step toward that goal, with Meta AI surpassing the 500 million user mark, Zuckerberg revealed during the company’s latest earnings call.
The milestone of half a billion users comes barely a year after the social network first launched its AI assistant last fall. Zuckerberg said the company still hoped to become the “most used” assistant by the end of 2024, although he never specified how the company measured that metric.
Meta’s Assistant isn’t the only AI tool that drives business operations. Zuckerberg said AI improvements in its feed and video recommendations led to an 8% increase in time spent on Facebook and a 5% increase on Instagram this year. Advertisers are also taking advantage of the company’s AI tools, he said, with more than 15 million ads created with generative AI in the last month alone. “We think there’s a lot more potential here,” Zuckerberg said.
Outside of AI, Meta’s Threads app also continues to grow. The service now has “nearly 275 million” monthly users, according to Zuckerberg. “The number of registrations is increasing by more than a million per day,” Zuckerberg said, adding that “engagement is also increasing.”
