OpenAI reportedly plans to create a native web browser powered by artificial intelligence (AI). According to a report, the AI company is planning to take on Google Chrome with its browser platform and has started discussing its plans with several website and app developers. Besides, the AI company is also said to be in discussions with Samsung to integrate its AI functionality into the latter’s devices. These developments, in addition to the recently released SearchGPT feature, could allow OpenAI to compete with Google on several fronts.
OpenAI reportedly intends to develop a web browser
A report in The information citing people familiar with the matter, sheds light on OpenAI’s projects. OpenAI plans to develop a native web browser that can be integrated with ChatGPT to provide users with an AI-driven experience, according to the publication.
OpenAI reportedly spoke with several website and app developers such as Condé Nast, Redfin, Eventbrite and Priceline to create the web browser. Discussions also reportedly included deals to optimize search functionality for travel, dining, real estate and retail websites. The latter is believed to be aimed at expanding the functionality of SearchGPT.
Why OpenAI might consider developing its own web browser
The report also highlights two other reasons why the AI company is considering its browser. First, OpenAI is said to want to control the primary gateway through which people use the web in order to increase ChatGPT’s user base. Second, the company is expected to soon launch a feature called “Operator”: AI agents capable of performing complex tasks on the web. The company does not want to rely on third-party browsers to grant permissions to the AI agent.
Separately, the publication claims that OpenAI also discussed the possibility of integrating AI features on devices manufactured by Samsung. The proposed partnership would be similar to that concluded with Apple. If this deal goes through, the AI company will power the AI features of the Google Pixel’s two main smartphone competitors.
Apart from this, the creator of ChatGPT also competes with Google on the search engine front with SearchGPT. The feature is available in ChatGPT and is highlighted by the globe web icon. When enabled, the chatbot generates answers by searching them directly from websites on the Internet instead of using its internal knowledge base.
