Iinside the robotics laboratory of the Toyota Research Institute (SORTING) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a group of robots are cooking. There’s nothing special about it; Robotic chefs have been around for a while. But these robots are more capable than most: they flip pancakes, slice vegetables, and make pizzas with ease. The difference is that instead of being painstakingly programmed to complete their tasks, the Cambridge robots have only learned a basic set of skills. Using the wonders of artificial intelligence (AI), they quickly improved these skills to become much more dexterous.
