The British IA security institute will focus on prejudice and freedom of expression to focus on crime and national security problems, the technology secretary will announce on Friday.
The agency will also be renamed as an AISI Safety Institute (AISI), emphasizing its renewed accent on crime and security issues.
The secretary of technology, Peter Kyle, is expected to announce the new name of the agency at the Munich security conference on Friday with a new “abusive” team, in partnership with the home office.
The objective of the institute from the start was on security and we have formed a team of scientists focused on serious risks for the public
Ian Hogarth, AI Security Institute
Explaining before the event, Mr. Kyle said: “The changes I announce today represent the next logical step in the way we approach the responsible development of AI – helping us to release AI and to develop the economy as part of our change plan. “
He added that “renewed concentration” on security “would assure that our citizens – and those of our allies – are protected from those who are looking to use AI against our institutions, our democratic values and our way of life”.
Crime and security problems are already part of the Institute’s procedure, but it is currently covers wider societal impacts of artificial intelligence, the risk of becoming autonomous and the effectiveness of safety measures for systems .
Created in 2023, the Minister of the time, Rishi Sunak, said that the Institute “would advance knowledge of the world of IA security”, in particular “all the risks of damages such as prejudices and disinformation , up to the most extreme risks of all ”.
Although Mr. Kyle insisted that the work of the “will not change” institute, the Department of Sciences, Innovation and Technology said that the renamed agency “will not focus on the biases or freedom of expression “.
Security refocusing should understand how AI can be used to develop chemical and biological weapons, carry out cyber attacks and allow crimes such as children’s fraud and abuse.
AISI President Ian Hogarth said: “The objective of the Institute from the start was on security and we have formed a team of scientists focused on serious risks for the public.
“Our new team of criminal improper use and deepening the partnership with the national security community mark the next stage in the fight against these risks.”
Also Friday, Mr. Kyle announced a new partnership between the United Kingdom and Anthropic, an AI company based in San Francisco, the first agreement involving the new Sovereign IA of the government.
The director general of Anthropic, Dario Amodei, said: “We are impatient to explore how the AI assistant of Anthropic Claude could help British government agencies improve public services, in order to discover new ways to make information and vital services more effective and accessible to British residents. ”
The government began the year with a major emphasis on AI, stating plans to increase the UK AI industry and integrate technology in the public sector.
In addition to the launch in January of an AI action plan, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer wrote to the ministers asking them to make the adoption and growth of AI in their departments an absolute priority.
