The latest Strongdm report, “The state of AI in cybersecurity“, Highlights increasing concerns and the preparation of cybersecurity professionals to meet the challenges focused on AI. Based on a survey of 600 cybersecurity professionals, the report highlights urgent problems concerning AI regulation, perceived threats, defense confidence and the future of effective cybersecurity.

Regarding regulations: 76% of cybersecurity professionals believe that AI should be “strongly regulated” to avoid improper use, highlighting the need for balance between safety and innovation.

AI threats: Of the 87%significant of respondents expressed concerns about AI cyber attacks, with malware (33%) and data violations (30%) as the most important threats.

Preparation levels: Only 33% of professionals feel “very confident” in their current defenses, and 65% of companies admit that they are not fully prepared for attacks powered by AI.

Impact of the workforce: Despite the challenges, two thirds of respondents feel optimistic about the potential for improving AI, rather than replacing jobs in cybersecurity.
A call for regulations in the midst of rapid AI growth: The report reveals that 76% of the professionals questioned support the “strong regulations” of the AI to mitigate potential risks. However, 15% fear that excessive surveillance can suffocate innovation. This highlights the need for balanced regulations that guarantee security while promoting technological progress.
Growing concern about attacks fueled by AI: The potential of the AI to allow new vectors of attack is a level of mind for cybersecurity professionals, 87% citing their concern concerning the threats focused on the AI. Malventy software and data violations appeared as the main concerns fueled by AI, with 33% and 30% of respondents, respectively, indicating their apprehension on these types of attacks.
The levels of confidence are low, but hope persists: The report highlights a striking contrast in the preparation, because only 33% of respondents expressed their “very confident” in their current defenses against AI threats. Meanwhile, 46% felt “somewhat confident” and 17% admitted that their organizations were not ready for AI attacks. These results emphasize an urgent call for stronger strategies and investments to strengthen specific AI defenses.
Companies play catching up: Strongdm’s research has revealed that 65% of respondents admitted that their organizations are not fully prepared for AI -oriented threats. While 32% of companies actively invest in AI defenses, 48% say that there is still a lot to do to fill the gap.
The mixed IA impact on cybersecurity labor: Despite the concerns about AI, two thirds of cybersecurity professionals maintain an optimistic vision of the impact of technology on their work. 40% believe that AI will improve the roles of use without replacing them, and 25% provide for the creation of new job opportunities. Nevertheless, 30% expressed fears of replacement of employment, presenting the nuanced views that professionals occupy the future role of AI in the labor market.

Methodology
The report is based on a survey carried out in October 2024, targeting 600 cybersecurity professionals based in the United States. The survey was carried out online via Pollfisques, and the answers were random, volunteer and completely anonymous.
