The Chinese government’s commitment to maintain close control of AI is an obstacle to all American companies. … (+)
Apple CEO Tim Cook recently made his third trip to China, stressing the essential role of this country in the global business strategy. This visit comes as Apple seeks to integrate its Apple Intelligence suite in the devices sold in the region, sailing in a complex regulatory environment which requires careful negotiation and local partnerships.
In the United States, Apple has already started to deploy Apple Intelligence, a suite fueled by AI designed to improve user experiences through its ecosystem. However, the deployment of similar technology in China is much more difficult. According to sources familiar with the question, Apple even explored the exploitation of its models of large language (LLM) in the country.
I have made many visits to China and worked with companies that had to face the Chinese regulation organizations. In many cases with which I have been involved, it was clear that the objections or rules of China were entirely parish and designed to ensure that China has an ultimate control of the technology that promotes them, regardless of external technology that could be superior.
The regulatory landscape of China for a generative AI set up significant obstacles. An official of the China Cybperspace Administration (CAC) recently revealed that foreign companies like Apple are faced with a “long and complex approval process” to manage their own models. The manager stressed that collaboration with local Chinese technological companies – the LLM of which have been checked – would provide a much faster and simpler path.
Collaborating with local Chinese companies and using their “approved by the Chinese government “ LLMS is a veiled attempt to ensure that China has more control over the content of the AI.
Cook’s visit is aligned with the reports that Apple has been in talks with Chinese technological companies to integrate AI approved AI solutions in its devices. This approach reflects Apple’s broader strategy to balance innovation with local sensitivities on one of its most important and most important markets. By taking advantage of the partnerships, Apple can bypass the long regulatory examination required for foreign propulsion AI systems while providing improved features to users in China. Although Apple is not happy not to be able to use your LLM, this may be the price that Apple must pay to provide any improved AI feature in China.
CAC’s comments were made on the sidelines of World Internet conference In Wuzhen, an annual event that has become a focal point for discussions on digital policies in China. The manager noted that any company offering generative AI services in China must undergo rigorous tests and approval for their models, strengthening the government’s commitment to maintain close control over the development of AI within its borders.
