CAIO is an emerging role, and given its novelty, its responsibilities are not well defined. CAIO has separate responsibilities but overlapping roles such as the data director (CDO), the information chief (IOC), the technology director (CTO) and the Director of Information Security (CISO). Some Caios report to the CEO, others to COO and others to the CTO, according to the existing organizational structure.
A CAIO will have to have a unique mixture of technical expertise, strategic vision, leadership and ethical insight to successfully direct the initiatives of AI.
The most obvious component of the skills set is perhaps the technical skills of AI and automatic learning, data science and analysis, development of traditional software and an understanding of AI infrastructure.
Beyond technical expertise, CAIO will also have to have leadership, strategic vision and business sense worthy of the C-Suit. CAIO will be responsible for winning the enthusiasts of stakeholders throughout the organization in order to finance and promote AI initiatives. Caios must be able to articulate a powerful history that aligns with the broader business objectives of the company, identify the new market opportunities made possible by AI and have skills to manage large -scale interfunctional projects.
Finally, a solid ethical basis will help Caios serve the organization and help ensure that projects are safe, safely.
