The Qwen models and a $53 billion bet on AGI.
Alibaba Group builds the Qwen family of large language models, among the most widely used open-weights models in the world, and runs China's largest cloud business. In February 2025 CEO Eddie Wu committed 380 billion yuan (about $53 billion) to AI and cloud infrastructure over three years and called artificial general intelligence the company's primary objective. In 2026, after Qwen's technical lead departed, Wu took charge of a new foundation-model task force.
