Liang Wenfeng co-founded the quantitative hedge fund High-Flyer and in 2023 spun out DeepSeek to pursue AGI research, funded by the fund rather than outside investors. DeepSeek's R1 model upended assumptions about the cost of frontier AI in January 2025, and its V4 models followed in April 2026 with open weights under the MIT license. He rarely gives interviews.
