About
Ren Zhengfei founded Huawei in 1987 and built it into the world's largest maker of telecom equipment. Under US sanctions since 2019, Huawei developed its own Ascend AI chips, which have become the main alternative to NVIDIA in China. In 2025 Ren said Huawei's chips remain a generation behind US rivals but that clustering and packaging can narrow the gap.
Ren's Huawei is central to China's effort to build an AI technology stack independent of the United States.
