Zhang Yiming founded ByteDance in 2012 and built Toutiao, Douyin and TikTok around recommendation algorithms. He stepped down as CEO in 2021 but remains its largest shareholder, and reportedly spends half his time on Seed, ByteDance's AI research team. Its Doubao assistant had about 345 million monthly users in early 2026.
