AI has the power to fundamentally change the way we live, work and learn, through its ability to help and empower people in almost every area of human endeavor. That’s why it’s important that we help the next generation equip themselves with the right digital skills to thrive.
Today, Google launched the AI Campus, attended by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to show support for our groundbreaking initiative to improve digital skills in the UK, at our home in London and across his constituency. The campus, located in Somers Town, Camden, was developed in partnership with Camden Council and Camden Learning and is home to a two-year training pilot project aimed at inspiring, informing and educating local sixth form students in the field of AI.
The pilot will provide students with access to cutting-edge AI and machine learning resources, as well as mentorship and industry expertise from Google, Google DeepMind and others. Students are also offered real-world projects that connect AI to diverse fields, including health, social sciences and the arts, to allow them to explore the range of local and global challenges for which AI can be used. used.
The initial cohort is already underway, with 32 students reflecting the diversity of Camden’s post-16 student body. Preference was given to applicants from under-represented groups, including those eligible for free school meals.
From mid-2025, more students will also be able to benefit, as the campus will provide out-of-school learning and support for all Camden students to improve their access to technology, digital and fundamental AI learning, and AI-focused masterclasses for everyone.
Beyond Camden, AI Campus’ message goes to the heart of what Google stands for: making the world’s information accessible and useful for everyone. Google’s mission came to life in a garage over 25 years ago, but it’s still relevant today as we enter this era of AI innovation.
With new funding of over £865,000 from Google.org, the Raspberry Pi Foundation is building on the early successes of Experience AI, a free educational program co-created by the Raspberry Pi Foundation and Google DeepMind. This funding will help the Raspberry Pi Foundation work with ParentZone to scale the program and provide valuable training to teachers across the UK, with the aim of reaching an additional 250,000 students by the end of 2026.
Google’s commitment to skills development in the UK is enduring and part of our ambition to use AI to improve the lives of people across the country, ensuring everyone can benefit of the benefits of AI, whatever its origin.
We have already trained over a million people and businesses across the UK in digital and AI skills, in partnership with governments, unions, NGOs and local communities – and recently launched the program AI Works to discover the most effective ways to accelerate the adoption of AI skills and increase productivity across the UK.
And by benefiting from world-class AI training, the next generation can pioneer the transformative use of AI. This is a mission that will boost the UK’s global competitiveness, but also life-changing and life-saving scientific advances. This is the opportunity before us and Google is ready to play its role.
