ByteDance, the company behind TikTok and Douyin, builds the Doubao assistant, which had about 345 million monthly active users in the first quarter of 2026, making it one of China's most-used consumer AI apps. Its Seed research team, which hired former Google DeepMind vice president Wu Yonghui in 2025, develops the underlying models.
