xAI was founded by Elon Musk in 2023 to build Grok, an AI assistant built into the X social network. It built Colossus, one of the world's largest AI supercomputers, in Memphis in a matter of months. In February 2026 SpaceX acquired xAI in an all-stock deal valuing the combined company at $1.25 trillion, and Musk has said Grok and X will move into a SpaceX AI unit.
